Dr. Donald M. Shapiro passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at River View Nursing, Wilkes-Barre. Born Chicago, Illinois, he pursued his education at Roosevelt University, Chicago, and Chicago College of Osteopathy.
He served his internship and medical residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital; medical residency at Wilford Hall U.S.A.F., Lockland Air Force Base, Texas; Hematology Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, and Oncology Fellow at M.D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas. He also instructed at the University of Texas Medical School and was Clinical Professor at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. He also served on the staff of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Nesbitt Hospital, Geisinger Hospital, and the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, where he served as Chief of Oncology and Hematology until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Shapiro of Xenia, Ohio, and brother, Dr. Howard Shapiro of Palm Springs, California.
He will be greatly missed by his long-time Companion, Carol Ashton.
